Adding 3 fractions with dissimilar denominators
Using the rule of four to add three fractions with different denominators, I will lay out the steps with directions. After this I will explain how to use the associative property of addition to make good choices that help the problems be a little easier.
1. Use the rule of four on the first two fractions.
2. Rewrite the fractions and add them together.
3. Write your new problem of the fraction you just added and your unchanged fraction and use the rule of four.
4. Now add your fractions together.
This is not the easiest way, use your associative property to make easier choices:
1. I'm going to reorder my fractions to make this a little easier on myself.
2. Rule of four for the first two fractions:
3. Add my fractions together and rewrite my problem with the new fraction and the remaining fraction. Then I will use the rule of four again.
4. Now add your two fractions together.
